Her name is Kelsie Iris, spelled K-E-L-S-I-E, and then I-R-I-S, like the goddess of rainbows. A blue collar adorns her speckled neck as a subtle protest against gender norms, a statement and issue unknown to the protester who is too preoccupied with the fuzzy neon ball hurdling through the air to notice. The quick movements and constant motion of Kelsie Iris serve as testaments to her diverse background. Fostered in Mississippi, rescued in Louisiana, and picked up in Maine, the multi-colored paws of this little traveler have brushed against the dogwood trees of the South and treaded the loosely packed soils of New England before finding her home in the rolling hills of Hanover. Her caretaker and best friend, Allie Fudge, tells me that they'll move back to California one day. But right now she is still bolting back and forth across the grass, entranced by the endorphin-producing workout and predictable rhythm of the game of fetch going on in front of me. Watching her ecstasy each time the ball is thrown, I imagine that this dog would love nothing more than to play a game of fetch that spanned across the entire country. The blindingly bright ball of rubber would be slung from New Hampshire to the Golden Coast of California, Kelsie in tireless pursuit as her deft legs propelled her across farms in Iowa and the mountainous topography of Colorado. She would finally obtain the object of her fixation on the shores of Newport Beach, where her paws would sink into the warm sand of the Coast before her senses become inundated with the refreshing coolness of the Pacific. She would swim towards the horizon, tongue hanging sideways out of her mouth, focused not on the past, and not even entirely on the present, but on the neon rubber sphere that rides on the waves ahead. -- by Alexander See
