I grew up in suburban Chicago, or tried to. I thought you grew up by working, by providing for yourself. What skills did I have? I started at McDonalds with a work permit on my 14th birthday. But Northern WI, land of my beloved Bible camp and its stable full of Tennessee walkers already had my heart and my summers and most weekends. I saw this sign while on a town run for the camp, and did some exploring. Mepp's wasn't hiring anyone to make its lures, but I could indeed sell them raw material: deer and squirrel tails. I don't remember the price--I wanna say somewhere between ten cents and a buck a tail. I shot a couple squirrels for the crock pot in WI, and then when I went home for the week, I figured I'd save up more tails, supplement my fast food income. I saw three fresh roadkill on my way to work and began slicing away at the junction between tail and body. I was on my second squirrel when a nice suburban car slowed--a Volvo or a Caddy--and a guy rolled down his window and yelled, "You're SICK." I folded my knife up, never turned in the tails. #truestories #northwoods #photomemoir #countrylife #suburbia #photoessay #roadkill #squirrels
