New Hampshire is the only state with no mandatory seat belt law for adults, which is reason number 5 on the Free State Project's “101 Reasons to Move to New Hampshire.” Most of the Free Staters are staying put until they hit the “trigger” number of 20,000 signatories to the Free State pledge: “I hereby state my solemn intent to move to the state of New Hampshire. Once there, I will exert the fullest practical effort toward the creation of a society in which the maximum role of civil government is the protection of life, liberty, and property.” But some Free Staters have jumped the gun. They celebrate their impending liberation every year at Porc Fest. “Porc” is short for porcupine, the mascot the movement prefers to the menacing snake of the "Don't Tread on Me" flags. At Porc Fest, Free Staters gather on the grounds of half burnt-out motel, letting their freak flags fly and their open carry handguns – what does a holstered handgun do? Lurk? Deter? Intimate? “Nothing,” says Alex, if you can’t see it. He’s a student at the University of New Hampshire, where guns are forbidden all together. “At Dartmouth,” I tell him, “there’s an armory for students’ guns.” He doesn’t like the sound of that. “Might as well hand your gun over to the police.” Is his gun loaded? It is—why else would he carry it? Good question. “Why do you carry it?” Pleasure, he says. “How does it make you feel?” That’s not the point, he says. What’s the point? “How it makes the other guy feel.” He looks me up and down. “How it makes YOU feel.” // #photoessay 1 of 5 #freestate #opencarry
