Text

"Role of the State / vis-a-vis the individual," reads the note at the top of my father's poetry cabinet. Here he tapes poems clipped from magazines. "Eurydice," by Tim Kendall, "Telephone Ringing in the Labyrinth," by W.S. Merwin, and on the side two little poems Roxy said when she was three. "Good people / and mad people / and bad people / and knockabout people." (We're Jews; as it happens my father keeps a menorah in this cabinet, along with tea and glasses and multi-colored flexi-straws for the grandchildren.) And then there's Roxy's second poem: "The night I was born / You were born / We were born / We were born together."
